Students Take Ownership at Conferences

Our 7th grade teachers accepted the challenge as part of the Idaho Middle School Reform Task Force recommendation to initiate student-led conferences.  The theory behind student-led conferences is that students take greater ownership in understanding and being responsible for their academic performance.  Involving the students in this process makes a lot more work for our teachers, but has the added benefit of helping students communicate their strengths and weaknesses in each class to their parents.

Dual Immersion Students Enter Contest

The Dual Immersion students have each entered a contest sponsored by the National Association for Bilingual Education (NABE).  The theme of the contest is "Being Bilingual."  The students will write the essays in English but must be prepared to present in English and Spanish at the awards ceremony in Austin, Texas.  A $1,500 cash award will be presented to the winner.

Some of the students' comments when asked about being bilingual included:

" I feel like I have the upper hand."
"I could be somebody who travels and understands the world."
"Para poder ser alguien en la vida y saber mas de dos idiomas."

NEW SIGN FINALLY ARRIVES AT WOOD RIVER MIDDLE SCHOOL

Years ago when the new wing was added to WRMS, the sign was accidentally destroyed.  The Leadership students of the Class of 2010 decided that we needed a new sign.  They also thought it would be a good idea to order one that would allow the school to inform parents about school events.  It didn't take them long to raise enough money to purchase a new sign for our school.  Thanks to Jill Clark and the awesome BCSD Maintenance staff, our new sign is installed!  Thanks everyone who was involved in "Making it Happen!"
